About Katy Sawrey

Katy Sawrey is an abstract artist whose work explores landscapes, light, and atmosphere. Until late 2025 she worked from her home studio in Portobello, Edinburgh, drawing inspiration from the surrounding seaside. She preliminary paints abstract landscapes, focusing on the way light transforms the land depending on the time of day and season, and uses geometric shapes and layered colour to give depth, texture, and a sense of immersion in the scene. Her paintings often verge on the abstract, inviting viewers to experience the emotional essence of a place.

Katy is drawn to colour in all its forms, from fashion and tiles to print design and the way light falls on surfaces, and these influences inform her bold yet considered compositions. She often works in collections, allowing each piece to stand on its own while still speaking to the others. She has now relocated to New Zealand, continuing to develop her practice and explore new landscapes and atmospheres.

Originally trained in print at Central Saint Martins, Katy returned to painting during lockdown after years focused on raising her family. Her work has been exhibited widely across Scotland and is held in private collections both locally and internationally.
