About Ursula Cleary

Based in Glasgow, Ursula Cleary creates richly textured abstract paintings that explore mood, memory and the layered histories embedded within the landscape. Fascinated by the city's industrial past, her work examines the meeting point of natural and built environments, revealing traces of place through expressive surfaces and atmospheric compositions.

A graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Ursula began her career as a visual and scenic artist in theatre before spending many years as an Art Director and Designer in film and television. Her background in visual storytelling continues to inform her painting practice, where narrative is conveyed through gesture, texture and material rather than direct representation.

At the heart of Ursula's work is an interest in the tactile history of surfaces. Building her paintings through layers of paint and expressive brushwork, she evokes a sense of urban archaeology, where weathered walls, industrial remnants and changing landscapes become repositories of memory. The resulting works are both physical and atmospheric, inviting viewers to reflect on the evolving relationship between people, place and time.
