About Jean Bay Frazer - Bay Studio Ceramics

Fife-based ceramic artist Jean Bay Frazer creates wheel-thrown stoneware shaped by her connection to the Scottish coastline and landscapes surrounding her studio. “Bay” is both her middle name and a nod to the coastal influences that run throughout her work.

Her practice spans functional tableware and one-off decorative vessels, balancing considered forms with a sense of spontaneity and movement. While much of her work is rooted in the repetition and rhythm of production, Jean also creates pieces that allow her to work intuitively, without a predetermined design. Guided by the clay and the movement of her hands, forms emerge through instinct, curiosity and the pleasure of making.

Glazing is approached with the same sense of freedom, with each vessel glazed in response to its individual form. Jean develops layered surfaces using a palette inspired by the coastline and forests of Fife, allowing colour, texture and serendipity to become an integral part of each piece.

Her one-off works embrace individuality, spontaneity and presence, offering a more expressive and exploratory side to her practice while maintaining her deep connection to the natural world.
